NC Raceway to add IMCA Sport Mods, 2014 Schedule Highlights

Norman County Raceway adds IMCA Northern Sport Mod

Buffalo River Race Park announced earlier this week that they would exchange their WISSOTA B-mod and Modified classes for the IMCA counterpart: IMCA Modifieds and Northern Sport Mods. Now Norman County Raceway has announced it will keep its WISSOTA Modified and B-mod classes, however it will ADD the IMCA Northern Sport mod class. Also, they will most likely bring back the Hornets and do so as an IMCA sanction.

Basically the IMCA Northern Sport Mod is a more affordable version of the B-mod according to NCR Track Owner/Promoter Jake Bitker.

"In a Northern Sport Mod, the rear spring have to be on top of the rear end housing, they have a limited shock, 9" rear end with mini-spools, no lightened gear, and must have solid axels. They may also have a GM602 crate motor or a 9:1 compression motor."

The appearance is very similar to B-mod, although it does allow for a 6" spoiler.

For more information on the rules go to the IMCA website. (www.imca.com)

2014 Schedule

Along with a new class, Bitker looks to have his schedule set for 2014. It will posted on the website soon, but for now here's a couple of highlights that should make this another blockbuster summer at Norman County Raceway.

*A few Saturday IMCA Modified Specials (including 1 during the Norman County Fair)

*NOSA Sprint Cars return on July 10th

*Back to back Late Models on Wednesday/Thursday during the Norman County Fair

*Possible FULL IMCA show on Saturday of NC Fair......plus School Buses!

...plus much more I'm sure, but that's all I got out of Jake so far.

The full schedule should be out within the next week or two.

Racing on the Radio Christmas Lists

With the holiday season approaching, local race car drivers are writing their letters to Santa, trying to convince ol' St Nick that they've been good boys and girls and sending him a list of things they would like for Christmas. Well truth be told, there is no Santa, and I have intercepted those letters. I thought maybe I could share a few of the items on their lists.

Mike Balcaen asked for some new arteries, since his have been clogged with racer nachos and hot dogs after 30 years of racing.

Travis Sauer wants nothing more in the world then to finally find someone who can actually beat him in a B-mod.

It doesn't matter what Dustin Strand wants, he's going to get a lump of coal for yelling at the officials.

Casey Arnenson would like a fancy new safe to store all the cash he won this year.

Oddly enough Austin Arnenson wants a book called "Safe Cracking for Dummies."

Bob Sagen would like a Performance Bodies catalog newer then 1998.

I don't know what Donny Schatz wants for Christmas because he never wrote a letter. He was too busy winning.

Rich Pavilcek wants Tyler Peterson delivered to his doorstep wearing a giant red bow....not sure what that's all about.

Jake Bitker really would really, really like a top 5 finish at his own race track this year.

Amber Balcaen wants to know why guys are always reading her shirt.

Billy Michaelsohn would like a video copy of the one time he actually won a heat race this year.

Ken Crane will not be getting anything for Christmas because last year he "accidentally" pulled a slide job and blocked Santa from getting to Dean Lundon's house.

Scott Sailer is wishing for a big corporate sponsor to fund a new racing TV show.

And I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Oh, and I want nachos too...just saying.

Racing on the Radio Awards

Even though the points champions are already crowned and the awards banquet is months away, I figured I’d take the time to hand out some my own awards to some of the area drivers. These awards, unfortunately, are not real, and are just for fun.

The first award I’d to like hand out is for the Top Rookie, and it goes to Luke Johnson, driver of the #8J Mod 4. It’s not his first year racing, but it’s his first year in a Mod 4, and he has been fantastic all year long. He even has a handful of wins and is near the top in points. Next is the Hard Charger, the award given to the driver who even if they start towards the back always seems to find his way to the front. That award goes to Rich Pavilcek, driver of the #17 Midwest Modified. Starting in the back is some sort of sick, twisted game for this guy. I think he actually enjoys the challenge.  Pavilcek also wins the award for best post race celebration for his up against the wall burnouts at Buffalo River Race Park.

Best Wreck of the Year is a tie between Chris Shirek’s head over heels Sprint Car flip that sent him flying a solid 10-15 feet in the air on the front stretch at Norman County Raceway during the NOSA Sprint Car Special on June 27th, and Ron Saurer’s nasty tire clipping, barrel roll into the fence at I94 Speedway in Fergus Falls on August 9th. The Saurer crash is on the internet. Just search “Ron Saurer” on YouTube and see for yourself.

I’ve seen a lot of fantastic battles throughout the summer, but the Best Race of the Year goes to Austin Arnenson and Cody Skytland during the Sander’s Modifed Challenge at NCR on August 15th. For the final 20 laps, the two U-Motors teammates battled literally door to door, swapping positions back and forth for remainder of the race. Skytland would eventually cross the finish line first. I’d also like to nominate Austin Arnenon, along his little brother Casey and pit road neighbor Bryce Borgen for the Three Stooges Award. Those three amigos are seriously the biggest goofballs in the pits. Bryce will also go home with the award for the Top Moment of 2013 for ridding his curse and winning his first race at NCR earlier this summer. I could send him an actual award, but I think the standing ovation he received after the race will last longer than any trophy will.

And my final award will be for the Drivers of the Year. This award goes to the drivers who are not only wicked fast, but also show good sportsmanship and promote the sport in a positive way. It was hard to give it just one, so I’d like to give to two: Brad Seng and Tyler Peterson. Peterson is a very mature driver for his age, and has been a dominant force in his Midwest Modified. He shows a great compassion for the sport and his younger fans. Brad Seng is a class act. He’s an honest individual, a fantastic racer, and a great promoter of the sport. Not to mention he won the John Seitz Memorial race..which is kind of a big deal.

That wraps up the first ever Racing on the Radio Awards Ceremony. Feel free to comment with your own as well!

Season Championship

Ladies and Gentleman, it's the Season Finale at NCR! After about an inch of rain this morning, the track looks to be in great condition as a full fleet of cars looks to make their way around the 3/8 dirt track for the last time this season. All classes will be running tonight including WISSOTA Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Mod 4's, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Trophy cars. Most of the Championships are already locked in at this point, but yet there's still a few battles to be had.

I don't know if the Trophy cars point's matter...but #2 of Mike Roy/Stacy Pederson has it locked solid. FYI I personally think Stacy is the better driver...or at least the crazier one.

In the street stock, Ryan Pommerer has a solid 20 point lead on James Tandeski. However the 2nd the place battle should be a good one with Rick Schultz only 1 point behind Tandeski. Jim Geringer and Adam Burrows aren't factors to move up, sitting in 4th and 5th respectively.

The Pure Stock division has Paul Colvin sitting comfortably 14 points ahead of Wade Moerke. Again the battle for 2nd place is a good one with Kenny Crane just 1 measly point behind Moerke. Taylor Saari (4th) and Mike Bjorgan (5th) have nothing to gain or lose.

The Mod 4 race is by far the closest battle we have. Rob VanMil sits just 10 points ahead of Aaron Wetterlin and 13 points ahead of Luke Johnson. Key for Rob is to get into the feature in one piece and a top 10 finish should get him a championship. Bryce Bjerken is in 4th place and Cory VanMil is in 5th.

Tyler Peterson is looking to wrap up his 2nd Track Championship of the year in a Midwest Modified. A start in the feature should get him there. He has a 24 point lead on arch nemesis Rich Pavilcek. Casey Arnenson, however, is just 1 point behind Pavy. Rob VanMil has had a solid year sitting in 4th place and Tyler Hall rounds out the top 5.

In the Modifieds you can pretty much crown Cody Skytland. I don't believe he even needs to show up tonight with a 40 point gap between him and 2nd place driver Bryce Borgen. Justin Jones sits 6 points behind the #7b with Austin Arnenson and Jamie Trautner to follow.

Other things you should know about tonight's race.
-They will be selling root beer floats again tonight...and yes...they are amazing!
-Should be specials on pretzels too from what I hear.
-There will be no racing broadcast, but I will be announcing the races as Jim is busy with football coverage.

Blaine Brothers Challenge/ Family Night at NCR

Well tonight marks the final Racing on the Radio broadcast of the 2013 race season at Norman County Raceway, so why not go out in style? Tonight the WISSOTA Blaine Brothers Late Model Challenge is in town and should bring some of the top names too such as Josh Redetzke, Zach Johnson, John Kaanta, Kent Arment, Chad Becker, Pat Doar, Dustin Strand, Brad Seng, Mike Balcaen, and others to the mix. Most of those guys were at NCR a couple weeks ago for an NLRA race and put on one of the best Late Model shows of the year. Kent Arment went on to win in from the 13th starting position. Modifieds, B-mods, Mod 4's, Pure Stocks, and Trophy Cars will also share some of the hot summer action tonight.

Tonight is also "Family Night" at Norman County Raceway. There will be FREE Child Admission with a paid adult admission! Also free glow in the dark necklaces to the first 100 kids. Plus lots of other prizes, meal specials, and games will going on during intermission. Roat Beer floats made with DAD's Root Beer will be served as well. (Somebody please bring me one during intermission!). And NCR will be auctioning off a couple 2-seater rides to benefit Relay for Life.

Also during intermission, we will be announcing the winner of NASCAR trip giveaway. If the winner is present, they will also get 2 season passes to the 2014 race schedule  at NCR.

And as mentioned, this will be the final broadcast of the year. We will not have the season championship because of fall sports beginning on the same day. No worries, I'm quite positive we'll be back again next year. Racing on the Radio Review will still be airing for a couple more weeks. The last episode of that will be on September 7th.

We might get things going a little bit early tonight, probably around 6:40pm for the Hillsboro Napa Prerace Show. Green Flag drops at 7pm. Tune in to 106.5 KRJB and www.krjbradio.com to listen. You can also listen to #RacingontheRadio on the "Tune in" app for your smart phones.

See ya at the track!

Dustin Strand: Effectively Wild

With a year plagued by rain outs, it’s been difficult for many drivers to get in as many shows as they’d probably like by this point in the season. For those with National Points on the mind, getting in as many shows as possible is crucial. Dustin Strand, the gun slinging Late Model driver out of Grand Forks, has been busy doing just that. Not only does Strand sit on top of the points for the NLRA Late Model series, but he also looks over an entire field of WISSOTA Late Model drivers. No easy task considering some of the drivers he’s ahead of include Curt Gelling, Kent Arment, and Zach Johnson.

As for any form of racing, consistency and luck have been a key to success early on says Dustin, “We’ve actually had a lot of 2nd’s so we’re trying to better that by one more spot, but we’ve had really good luck so far.” Oddly enough consistency isn’t a word many people would typically associate with the 30 year old. Consistent is word more commonly used to describe fellow veteran drivers such as Brad Seng or Mike Balcaen. Other things that come to mind for Strand are “wild,” “hot shot,” and “how the heck did he just do that?”  Darren Evavold, part owner of River Cities Speedway says, “He’s a real hot shoe! Loves to drive around the top of the race track. He’s fast!”

Even though consistency doesn’t come to mind when describing Dustin Strand, if you look back on his stats there’s no doubt that he has been just that. Since he began racing 11 years ago in a Street Stock, Dustin has won National Championships in the NOPA Streets and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, 12 track championships spread out over 5 tracks, and over 200 feature wins. But with a driving style that’ll leave you on the edge of your seat just by watching him, I still have a hard time describing him as “consistent.” “Consistent” just seems to slow. So perhaps we’ll give Strand the old baseball description of “Effectively Wild.”

This year Strand has over 20 shows under his belt in a Late Model. So far this season he’s raced everywhere from Emo, Ontario to Alexandria, Minnesota, to Huron, South Dakota. He has been top 10, if not top 5 for almost every single one of them, which is quite extraordinary for only his 2nd full season in a late model. Look for Stand weekly at River Cities Speedway on a weekly basis and when the NLRA Late Models come back to Norman County Raceway on August 8th.

Local Dirt Track Prophecies

With Norman County Raceway's school night set for this Thursday, August 1st. I thought I would have some fun with it. In most high school yearbooks, you will find a list "Senior Prophecies," which a list of off beat predictions for the graduating class. So in honor of School Night, I thought I'd make list of Prophecies for some of the local dirt track racers from around the area. I had some help from some fellow media friends and other drivers as well. DISCLAIMER: This is meant to be fun. It is in no way meant to disrespect anyone.

Derek Vesledahl gets a set of "Naked Lady" mudflaps to match the front if his car.

Cody Erickson wins a race cleanly from start to finish, and still gets yelled at for being an asshole driver.

Tom Cummings decides to actually finish a feature race, and wins by default after all the other mod 4's either wreck or pull off.

Brad Seng cuts off Tony Stewart in traffic. All hell breaks loose.

The real reason behind Casey Arnenson's nickname "Deuce" is discovered, which has something to do with a 4th grade ex-lax incident.

Andy Wagner actually fixes his car.

Scott Bintz's secret identity as an alien is discovered while attending a Star Wars convention.

Bog Sagen finally gets a new body on his modified that doesn't look like its from 1992.

Cody Erickson goes to driving school, but is quickly kicked out by his instructor, Jay MacDonald.

Tyler Peterson and Rich Pavlicek get DQ'ed from a dance contest for repeatedly bumping into each other. (submitted by Corey Litton).

Tom Corcoran finally retires....after 84 years of racing.

...and because I felt like I should include myself

I get hired as a stunt double for Rutledge Wood.

Again this is all in full. Feel free to share and comment and submit your own.

Mike Balcaen celebrates 30 years of racing

He’s a fan favorite most everywhere he goes. It could stem from his ability to win races, or it could be because of his friendly Canadian demeanor, but whatever the reason he’s been doing it for longer than I’ve been alive.  Mike Balcaen, driver of the #10 NLRA/WISSOTA Late Model, is racing head on into his 30th year of racing. In those 30 years, the Winnipeg native has won 37 Championship, 4 NLRA titles, and over 200 wins, making Balcaen one of the most decorated Late Model racers in the upper Midwest.

When it comes down to race day, Mike says he approaches it more like a work day. “Preparation is a big part of it. We spend tons of hours getting prepared for 15 minutes of racing. When you’re organized and your stuff is maintained it makes for a more enjoyable time than if you’re scattering around and you’re not prepared.” Wise words spoken by a true veteran.  Mike isn’t afraid to give out advice to younger racers eithes. Last week in Ada, he was found giving advice to some younger, rookie drivers in between races. He’s a role model to many young drivers, including his 21 year old daughter Amber, who’s been racing Lightning  Sprints for a handful of years and recently made her debut in the much more powerful 360 NOSA Sprint. “This sport is something than you gotta want to do. You can’t be forced into it because it takes so much time, energy, money, effort, and focus. If she wants to do that then we’re gonna support her on it, and we’re excited to see what happens next. It’s always fun to do stuff as a family!”

Even after 30 years of slinging sideways on dirt, 47 year old Mike Balcaen has no intention of quitting anytime soon. He’s still a top driver every night and for the sake of comparing; Tom Corcoran, driver of the #T1 NLRA Late Model, has been racing for 44 years and is still competitive as well. Mike admits that part of the reason he’s still racing is because it’s the only thing he knows, “I really haven’t found anything else better do. It’s extremely time consuming and expensive but it’s something we still enjoy doing. The competition is a fun thing to be a part of. I don’t know when we’ll quit. We won’t say when we do. We’re just going to fade off, but in the meantime we’re trying to enjoy ourselves, put on some good shows, and win some races.” Mike Balcaen can be found weekly at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, and will be a part of the NLRA Late Model series which makes two more appearances this year at Norman County Raceway in Ada.

No "Stranger" to Racing

44 year old Tonja Stranger (pronounced Tonya) made a name for herself racing in a different era. Race fuel was $2.50 a gallon. The first George Bush was in the White House. Her hometown Bemidji State Beavers were still a Division III hockey program. I was 1 year old. It was 1989 when Tanya entered her first race.  She went on to win several heat races and even 2 track championships in the Pro Stock class in 1993 and 1994 at Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon. Following that season, Tonja hung it all up for a different life. She left behind a big presence at the track, both literally and figuratively. She bought a home, bought a new pick up, and “grew up” as she put it. However, despite the track championships, she never won a feature race. But her racing career was not forgotten, nor was it over.

Fast forward about 17 years later. Race fuel is now about $9 a gallon. The 2nd George Bush was long gone. The Beavers hockey team had just shocked the nation by making the Division I Final Four the year prior. I could now legally be in a bar. The year was 2010 and a familiar name with a different look had returned to racing. Now 175 pounds lighter and still a larger than life personality, Tonja Stranger had returned to racing in a WISSOTA Mod 4. She credits close friend and fellow competitor Conrad Schwinn for getting her back into racing. She’s still in search of her first feature win, but as she stated in recent interview, “As long as I’m improving I’m happy.” She’s finished 4th, 3rd, and 2nd in recent feature races.

Her hometown track is Bemidji Speedway, a ¼ mile clay track her and her family also run. Although she likes to get out and run different tracks when she can. “It’s hard to enjoy racing as much as I’d like to, because being promoter of the track is hard enough. Bemidji is fun, but its nice going to other tracks where the other drivers aren’t always asking you where the pay window is,” chuckled Stranger.  And if you’re wondering how she feels being a female in a primarily male sport, Stranger says she proved herself against the guys in her first few years of racing. “I haven’t set the world on fire. I haven’t won a feature yet, but that’s my goal this year.”  Look for Stranger to make an occasional appearance at Norman County Raceway in the #97 Mod-4.

Andy Wagner "Racing for a Cure"

For the handful of years that Andy Wagner has been behind the wheel of a race car, he’s been sporting primarily orange and black paint schemes. Even his sunglasses and shoe laces are orange. This year, however, Andy, or “Spud” as he’s been called since a child, is sporting a new color. Not red, not green, not even blue, but pink. Yes, you read that correctly…pink. Not a common color for someone who played football, drives race cars, and bowls an average of 200. Yet I guarantee more people will commend him than tease him for his stereotypically feminine choice of color. That’s because on the front of Wagner’s #3x WISSOTA Midwest Modified is a pink ribbon and the words “Race for a Cure.”

For the 2013 race season, Andy has decided to give something back and promote Breast Cancer Awareness. Along with raising awareness, he’s raising funds to go towards Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. A portion of t-shirt and sweatshirt sales will go directly towards that. Wagner also noted that he may throw “a few dollars here and there” from his winnings depending on how he does each night. As of opening night of racing this year, he had sold about 100 t-shirts and great deal of sweatshirts too. When asked why he felt the need to give back Spud stated, “Everyone has been supportive of me so I thought maybe I could support them and do it for a good cause.”

So even though Andy Wagner can’t personally cure cancer himself by turning laps in a Midwest Modified, he can raise awareness and can raise a few dollars to support the cause. So I will not tease him about his color choice, but rather applaud him for doing so. But if he starts wearing pink shoe laces and sunglasses than its fair game.

Mid Season Analysis

Well we're about halfway through racing season at Norman County Raceway, even though it feels like we just got started. If you remember earlier in the year I posted my preseason predictions. Well as I look back there's a couple spots where I was pretty much dead on and other spots where I wonder what in the Sam heck I was thinking. Nonetheless I shall reflect and make right my previous predictions.

Wissota Modifieds
Well I predicted T-Sauer (that's what his homeboys call him) would win the championship, but he really hasn't been here that much and at this point I don't see it happening. He's still in the points hunt, but I think it will come down to Skytland, Borgen, and Arnenson. I didn't expect Skytland to run at NCR every week so I got caught off guard. Borgen is proving that he's a true contender in this class, and does so without the fancy hauler and 6 spare cars. Arnenson is just fast. He just needs a little luck and to get a starting spot.

Wissota Midwest Modifieds
I previously predicted Rob VanMill or Tyler Hall to be the top dawgs. And up until recently both those guys have had pretty unfortunate years. However, they've got their car figured out now, but keep in mind its a short season. Tyler Peterson has been mad fast. Rich Pavilcek has been too. Actually those two hooligans have been battling all year long. As the summer nights get hotter, I think that rivalry will too, and not like in a "Tom Cruise on a Crotch Rocket" kinda way. (Pardon the Top Gun reference)

Wissota Mod 4's
I'll be honest. I kinda #$%* the bed on this one too, but not that bad. I expected Derek Vesedahl to be dominant this year. But he's been anything but that at NCR this year. Now I mean no disrespect to the #22. Things just haven't went his way this year. Lucky for Derek, nobody has had a dominant season in those angry little bumblebees disguised as racecars. I'm pulling for VanMill, the old one to be more specific.

Wissota Street Stocks
My exact words when I made my streeter predictions were "I have no idea." So in that case I win. For most of the season its been Ryan Pommerererererer and Adam Burrows going back and forth.  I was really hoping for better car numbers this year so that's been one of my biggest disappointments in this class.  Racing has been pretty good though, ya know if you're in to that sort of thing.

Pure Stocks
The Crane Train has left the station and left the competition behind, just like I thought it would. BAM!

Other predictions/thoughts
-Well I also was right about mother nature being a pain in the behind. I feel really sorry for tracks like River Cities Speedway who have gotten a whopping 3 races (actually 2 1/2?) in so far this year. NCR and BRRP have been pretty lucky.
-Car counts and Crowd attendance have been pretty good throughout the region. Whoever said "local racing is dying" can suck it.
-There's a lot of big races coming up. Pretty much every week is a special of some sort. The racing is only going to get better and better.

Also big thanks to all those who have been tuning in to "Racing on the Radio" Thursday nights. We have a lot of great sponsors and a lot of great listeners. Thanks to all of you!!

Racing on the Radio 7-5-13 with guest Corey Litton

Well I typically don't podcast my shows because I don't have the time, I figured this week I would because Corey Litton was my featured guest. If you don't know Corey, he's the Justin Timberlake of Victory Lane interviewers. He's even got his own show on KFGO, but don't listen to it because mine is better. Technically he is the enemy and should be destroyed. BUT since the racing community is a very close group I'll allow him to live, and hell, I'll even let him be own my show. So here ya go!

Fair Week at NCR!

"5 days of family fun!" or it "5 days of beer drinking, deep fried foods, and high octane motorsports." I prefer the later, but either way you look at it the 2013 Norman County Fair is setting up to be one for the ages. It's just too bad Buck Zumhofe is in jail and there won't be any midget wrestling. I'm personally most excited for the racing with late models, school bus racing , demo derby, and everything else scheduled for this week. So fill up those beer mugs, sit back, and enjoy a little preview of the racing this week.

Wednesday June 19th: NLRA Late Models - B-mod Blitz
The 1st of the 4 scheduled late model shows at NCR is set to kick off this year's fair. All the big boys should be there including Mike Balcaen, Ricky Weiss, Brad Seng, and even 5x World of Outlaw champion Donny Schatz. Along with late models will be the Lightning Sprints, B-mods, Pure Stocks and Street Stocks. This is part 1 of the B-mod blitz. Winner of each feature gets $675 and I believe the driver with the most points from Wednesday and Thursday will win some extra cash or a free ride on the ferris wheel. The 2nd place driver gets a date with a carnie. 7pm start. The race will be broadcast on 106.5 KRJB and krjbradio.com. Hillsboro Napa prerace show starts at 6:45.

Thursday June 20th: Regular Thursday Night Thunder - B-mod Blitz
Along with it being a B-Mod special, NCR will have the mods, pure stocks, mod 4's, and trophy cars. I'm actually excited to see the pure stocks again because the numbers are up this year. It's also my birthday. I was hoping they would have switched the name of the race to the "Mark Askelson Birthday B-mod blitz" but I guess the title was too long or something. The race will be broadcast on 106.5 KRJB and krjbradio.com. Hillsboro Napa prerace show starts at 6:45.

Friday June 21st: 6 pack 1000 Enduro Series
This is race #2 of 6 for the series. The 1st one took place in Mahnomen this past week. Jacob Nelson was the winner. Its 150 laps, usually with an intermission at lap 75. Last year the race came down to the last lap, with the winner only nudging out the 2nd place car as they dodged around traffic. I'll be announcing again this year. Dennis Riepe is the trophy girl.

Saturday, June 22nd: SUPER MOTORSPORTS SATURDAY
This whole day is basically a mixing bowl of all things motorsports. The Valley Cruiser's are hosting a car show in the morning through afternoon. The Mudslingers ATV Mud Run starts at 2pm on the south side of the fairgrounds. Free to watch. Once that's over head on over to grandstands for the BAJA/school bus/ go-kart racing. I even hear there's going to be model T racing like there used to be in the old days at the track! Look for some celebrities to be driving the school buses including Mitch Johnson, Blake Borgen, and fairboard president Don Merkens will be driving the "Angora Goat Coach. Jake Bitker and myself will be having some fun announcing this one.

Sunday June 23rd: Demo Derby
Let's be honest...we all love to see stuff get destroyed. Plus this is the longest running Demo Derby in the state. One major upside this year is they're bringing in the Northern Outlaw Demo Series. These cars are the big boys of demo cars. Good chance cars will come from all over the state. Numbers were down in previous years so this should cure that.

Don't be afraid to stick around after the races and events this week. Should be music and fun times down in the beer garden every night. I may even stick around and have a beer with you.

6-13-13 ROTR News and Notes

Greetings! Its good to be back in good ol' Minnesota! Sounds like I missed some stellar racing last week, but I'm back now and ready for some action!

Tonight is "Meet and Greet" Night at Norman County Raceway. Fans will get a chance during intermission to get up close and personal with the drivers and their cars. Which more than likely means an extended intermission as well. Green flag is at 7pm. We'll have radio coverage as usual. Prerace show starts at 6:45. We will be covering next Wednesday's NLRA special as well.

This Saturday at 6pm marks the season opener for the Six Pack 1000 Enduro series at the Mahnomen Fair Grounds. I think I'm announcing it? Nobody has talked to me yet....so I can not confirm that. Next Friday the Enduro series continues at NCR.

Donny Schatz announced he will be appearing in a late model at NCR next Wednesday as part of the NLRA series. He will also be appearing at River Cities Speedway next Friday in both a late model AND a NOSA Sprint Car.  Schatz will appear at NCR in a Sprint Car on the 27th of June and then in late model a few more times after.

For those listening to the radio broadcast tonight, you may notice a difference in the quality of the commercials. Previously we have played ads out of my laptop at the track, but tonight we'll be using smart touch, which allows me to play the ads from the studio while being at the race track. Please feel free to tweet me (@MCAskelson) or message me if the levels between me and the ads are way off.

Thanks to those that have been reading my newspaper articles in the Norman County Index!

And lastly, thoughts and prayer go out to the family of Jason Leffler, a NASCAR driver who died last night while racing sprint cars in Bridgeport, NJ. Sometimes we forget how dangerous of a sport this really is even with all the advancements in safety.

That's all for now! I'll see ya at the track!
PS...next Thursday is my birthday, somebody buy me a race car.

6-3 Racing on the Radio News and Notes

A couple of tidbits I feel you should all be aware of.

First, Mother Nature is a being a prick. This is the 6th week of racing at NCR and we've gotten in just one race. I typically don't make it to many other tracks just because of scheduling conflicts and what not, but I think I'm gonna have to head on over to BRRP sometime soon. It's only a 30 minute trip from Ada and press gets in free....right? And free nachos? Beer? Right....

I will not be hosting the Thursday night Racing on the Radio broadcast at NCR this week. I will be in Detroit, headbanging and mosh pitting to the soothing sounds of Metallica. I realize you are now saddened beyond belief, but when your significant other asks you to go to Metallica with her...you go to Metallica with her. Kevin Kochmann will be running the broadcast along with Mike Spieker and Birk too like usual. Prerace is at 6:45pm.

My 1st "Racing on the Radio" column will appear in the Norman County Index this week. I may post it online at a later date, but I'd rather you buy the damn paper. This week I feature Andy Wagner and his "Race for a Cure" car. I won't tell you what next week's article is about, but I'll give you a hint. It'll be titled "No Stranger to Racing." I am pretty honored at the chance to write for the paper. I can officially say I've worked in TV, radio, and now print media.

5-29-13 News, Notes, Announcements!

So there's a lot going on right now so I'll sum it all one big ass blog. First on the agenda.....

Season Opener notes
It was a long one, but a good one. Great racing in most of the classes, especially the street stocks. However a long delay made for an irritable crowd for a while. I was running out of things to talk about as the officials were puzzled trying to figure out the line ups for the Modified B-Mains. It all stemmed because one car raced in the wrong heat and threw everything out of whack. It was the 1st race of the year, so I'll chalk it up to the fact that shit happens.

Other misc. notes from opening night and beyond...
-Tyler Peterson has a fast car. He's ran into some tough luck, and he is young yet, but he's going to give Travis Saurer a run for his money.
-Dustin Strand literally drove himself off the track last week. Worse yet is he had made his way to a top 6 transfer spot from the back of a B-main. So instead of easing up and being grateful for making a transfer spot, he continued, for lack of a better term, to drive the piss out of his race car. It's a bummer he ended his night on the backside of 3 and 4 versus being a serious contender for the A-main.
-I ate my Nachos at a record setting pace. I wasn't even in a hurry. I just love Nachos. I'm also a big fan of licking the leftover cheese after the chips are all gone, but you really didn't need to know that.
-Cody Erickson has a new nickname..."the High Side Hustler." He also promised to win on my birthday...which is June 20th.
-Tim Shiek took a tumble at BRRP this last weekend in his 31x Pure Stock...and it was captured with an onboard camera...watch it here
-Tomorrow night's Racing on the Radio coverage might be delayed because of a softball/baseball game. So if we're late getting on air that's why.

and I promised a big announcement...so here it is
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
Racing on the Radio is coming to the newspaper! The Norman County Index to be more specific. Look for a racing column from me most every week starting this coming Tuesday, June 4th. I'll be writing some driver profiles and special interest type stories.

Let's Go Racing!

We're all ready. We're all hungry for the sights, the smells, the sounds, and even the tastes. It's time. Let's go racing.

Thursday nights marks the much anticipated opener for what could be one of the best seasons in history for the small town, feel good, and somewhat historic Norman County Raceway. 4 Late Model shows, the return of the NOSA Sprints, and talented drivers that stretch across the entire field of cars. The "big boys" and their double decker haulers in search of a National Championship, the grass roots racers who are one wreck away from bankruptcy, and the farmers who park the tractors at 6pm and haul ass to the track to make draw. They will return with fresh cars, hearty new engines, a brand new set up, new tin and graphics. They return with nerves and the excitement of those first few laps before it all settles in drive like veterans once again.

For some drivers, its their first laps ever. Suddenly all those nights drifting around corners on back country roads mean nothing. Because now, when that green flag drops, you're actually racing for something. The thrill, a paycheck, a title, a trophy, the fame....whatever reason brought you to the track, it's now on the line.

Everything that happened last year is history. The failures, the wrecks, the wins, and the feuds are a thing of the past. It's a new season. Time to write your own history. Some will be disappointed, some will be content, but only one driver will win.

At 7pm the field of cars will come out of turns 3 and 4, put their foot to the floor, and for the first time this year...we will be racing!

See ya at the track!

P.S.

The races will be once again be broadcast all season long on 106.5 KRJB and krjbradio.com. Prerace will start at about 6:50pm. Green flag drops at 7pm.

NCR Test & Tune Scheduled for today!

Drivers! Time to dust off the fire suits, spend half your life savings on a barrel of VP, and put the finishing touches on the race cars! Norman County Raceway will be hosting a test and tune today from 5:30pm until 9:30. All classes of cars are welcome.

For me, I love the test and tune. It's a good opportunity to see the new race cars, interview some drivers, and just get the first taste and smell of racing into my bloodstream. As a race fan, there is no greater feeling than catching that first whiff of high octane, $9 a gallon, race fuel for the first time each season. It's the same feeling one might get walking into to the Metrodome and instantly smelling the roasted almonds. I take that back, if it's the Fargodome you smell roasted almonds, at the Metrodome all you smell is urine. Regardless, it's good to be back.

For drivers, I would imagine the test and tune can be a little nerve racking at times. There's always a bunch of rookie drivers who, for the first time ever, are getting behind the wheel of a race car. We all know one of them is gonna spin out at last 4 times in the opening session. And that's understandable. If you've never raced it's hard to know what your car is really capable of doing until you've done it. And there's always one or two car cars that seem to have to have a wreck or engine failure. For that to happen at a test and tune is sort of bittersweet. It's both frustrating and embarrassing to have to rebuild a car before you've even broke it in. But the way I look at it, it's better to have that happen now, rather than 2 laps into your 1st heat.

We will be broadcasting the races every Thursday this year, so this also gives me a chance to test out my own gear, as well as make sure all the PA and wireless equipment are in good working form. As mentioned I will also be looking for drivers who would like to do interviews. Get used to it, because you'll probably see me in the pits before the race walking around with my recorder like I did last year. Drivers, do not be afraid to do an interview. I don't ask any brain busters. Its really a great opportunity to promote your team and your sponsors. I look forward to meeting some new drivers and reconnecting with the ones I frequently visit with week in and week out.

First race is scheduled for next Thursday, May 16th. Modifieds, B-mods, Mod 4's, Street Stocks. and trophy cars will all be racing.

Photo of the Day: A sneak peak at Tyler Hall's #60 Midwest Modified. Yes, it's another pink B-mod. I'm officially dubbing this one the "pink panther."

Why is Travis Saurer so fast?

For years now, Travis Saurer's #21X WISSOTA Modified and Midwest Modified having been dominating the dirt tracks around Minnesota, North Dakota, and where ever else his hauler lands him. He is the Jimmy Johnson of WISSOTA. Between the two cars, he won 6 track championships in 2012. Whenever I ask his fellow competitors what their goals are for the next season, the answer is always "Beat Travis Saurer."

But how?

In order to beat Travis, one must first figure what makes him so fast. Sure, you might get lucky and beat him one night, but 2 or 3 nights in a row? That's tough. Travis is as smooth and consistent as they come. And he's not dirty so it's hard to justify taking him out or driving him dirty.

Is he cheating?

It's highly unlikely. Let's be honest, if he was he would have been caught by now. When you win that many races and championships, people are watching.  Unless maybe, just maybe he works for the FBI and has some sort of secret go-go juice that he puts in his race gas that is undetectable by modern technology.

Something in the water?

More likely its something in the Mello Yello. It's been well documented that Travis is a big fan of Mello Yello for years. Actually it's been rumored he doesn't drink water, or milk, or anything else but Mello Yello. He literally has that delicious citrus soda flowing through his veins. This constant sugar high gives him a competitive advantage and is completely legal.

Mr. Roboto

If you've ever watched him race, you would know his driving is smoother than John Stamos at a singles bar. How could one be so consistent and mistake free lap after lap after lap? Well, maybe he's not human. He could be a special robot created by WISSOTA to keep competition at a high level, which makes other drivers spend more money on new, better race parts, which then in turn results in more money for WISSOTA's corporate sponsors. Actually, the money Saurer makes from winning races is used to fund the WISSOTA 100 race in the fall.

Stickers add Horsepower.

This is the oldest trick in the book. Everybody knows that each sticker adds about 3HP...and Travis has alot of stickers! Not to mention his stickers are usually bright, shiny colors. This adds even more power yet. Plus he has an "X" in his number. I'm gonna assume that X is short for extreme. Once again that makes him even faster yet. Travis Saurer has the PERFECT combination of stickers, color scheme, and number, and that very well could be why he's so fast.

Now I realize these ideas might seem a bit of a stretch, but nobody really knows for sure, except Travis Saurer. And he probably won't tell anyone, because like I mentioned, he's a robot, and he's programmed not to tell anyone. True Story.

This week on ROTRR 4/20/13

ROTRR = Racing on the Radio Review in case you were wondering.....

I caught up with the "Deuce" Casey Arneson during the NCR kickoff party last Saturday. We'll have that interview this week.

I'll share a few thoughts on the giant heap of dog doo-doo that Penske racing got into this past week. NASCAR isn't messing around this year with fines and penalties. For future punishments I recommend they make their crew chiefs clean the port-o-potties...after Tony Stewart uses them. OR you could make the drivers go on a double date with Danica Patrick and Ricky Steinhouse.

And maybe a few other things. Make sure to tune in Saturday morning at 8:45am on 106.5 KRJB, Gold 101.5 KRJM, and 96.7 KKCQ.
Streaming online at:
www.krjbradio.com
www.krjmradio.com
www.kkcqradio.com

or download the tune-in app and you can listen on your smart phone as well.

I've been a little slow on the blog writing being there hasn't been much going on. Once the racing starts I'll get a lot more active. Keep an eye out though. I'm working on a piece diving into the question every mod and b-mod driver wants answered..."Why is Travis Saurer so fast?" It's gonna be a fun one too! :)

Also as you can see, Andy Wagner substituted his usual orange with pink this year, and did so for a good cause. I'll cover that in a future blog as well. Maybe now he'll get rid of those awful orange shoe laces.

Donny Schatz to appear at Norman County Raceway!

What? Did you think I was the celebrity driver I talked about in a previous post?

Norman County Raceway owner Jake Bitker made it official at Saturday night's NCR kickoff party. 5X World of Outlaw Champion and local sprint car hero Donny Schatz will be racing at Norman County Raceway in Ada on June 27th with the NOSA Sprints. From the sounds of it, he will be racing his own personal sprint car, not the one he races for the World of Outlaws. I mean we gotta keep things fair right?

This will be an excellent opportunity for fans to get to see one of the best up close in person. Bitker made mention that he's working on putting together some "VIP" packages for that night to give some people a chance to hang out with the legend and more. I'm calling for the rights to interview him 1st now. Sorry Scott Sailer...this is my track.

And because I wanted to leave you on a cliffhanger....Jake Bitker, who's seems to always have an extra late model or modified laying around somewhere, hinted at the idea that Schatz may not only appear at NCR in a sprint car this year. I'll let you draw your on conclusions on that one. :)

Race Banquet Saturday/ Racing Show begins

Good day race fans! Saturday (4/13) marks the start of the 2nd season of the Racing on the Radio Review program. Tune in at 8:45am on 106.5 KRJB in Ada, Gold 101.5 in Mahnomen, and 96.7 KKCQ in  Fosston. Yup. That's right. I'm on THREE stations now, because I'm awesome like that. I don't have guests this week but there should be plenty to talk about. If you would like to become a guest. Please get a hold of me. Otherwise I will also be looking for drivers to interview at the NCR Banquet kick off party this Saturday night also.

Which brings me to my next topic: The NCR Banquet/Kick Off party is this Saturday night at the Ada VFW. Social Hour begins at 6, but if you want to start drinking before than you are more than welcome. Banquet, which I assume means food, begins at 7, and then awards at 8. (SPOILER ALERT: Travis Saurer wins a lot them). After the awards you can drink again, unless you're Tyler Hall, who even if he was 21, wouldn't get served. Don't worry Tyler, facial hair is overrated anyways.

Also huge congrats to Casey "Deuce" Arneson on a huge "B-mod Nationals" win down at West Plains Motor Speedway in Missouri! I'm sure the $10,000 was quickly spent on gas, tires (legal ones of course), and a display case for the enormous trophy and over sized check he recieved.

That's all for now, hopefully I'll have some fun stuff to talk about after the banquet.

Can't miss races of 2013 at NCR

The new schedule for Norman County Raceway was released a few weeks ago on their website and its one that certainly impresses. I'm not gonna run down the entire schedule for you because that would be dumb. Instead I'm just gonna highlight some of the "can't miss" races for 2013. If you're greasy little hearts desire to see the full schedule, go www.ncraceway.com. Otherwise just know that they race Thursday nights at 7pm.

RV Mod Tour 5/23/13
This made an appearance at NCR last year and it was a huge hit! The RV Mod tour packed the pits with 48 of the best Modified drivers in the area (plus all the other classes). That was also the night Dustin Strand pulled a dive bomb on Cody Skytland in turn 3 to take away the final transfer spot and avoided having to go to the B-Main. Needless to say Cody wasn't happy and they ended up taking each other out later on in A-Main anyways. There was a ton of great racing that night and I expect the same this year. Jason Thoennes looks to repeat again this year.

Any race during the Norman County Fair 6/19/13 - 6/23/13
This year's Norman County Fair got extended an extra day, which is awesome because I can now eat way too many Cheese Curds 5 days in a row. But it also means more grandstand events. Wednesday night features the 1st of 3 NLRA Late Model events on the NCR calendar this year. Thursday night will feature regular racing. However there "B-Mod Blitz" scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, which I assume means increased purse, which also probably means more cars...better racing....more crashing....ya know if you're in to that kind of thing. The 150 lap Enduro race is Friday. Saturday is weird. There will be an ATV mud run to start the day, then there's return of the BAJA racing.....and get this.....School Bus racing. Yup. Also some Go-Kart racing too. Literally a little bit of everything. Sunday will host the Northern Outlaw Super Demo Derby. I know the numbers have been down in the past for the demo derby, but I'm told this sanction brings in a lot of cars. Also the Norman County Fair's Demo Derby is the longest running Demo Derby in the state. True Story. Don't go home once the races are over with during the fair. The beer garden should have some sort of entertainment every night. And make sure to buy me a beer on Thursday night. (my birthday)

NOSA Sprint Cars 6/27/13
I'm not sure when the last time I saw sprint cars at NCR, but I'm pretty sure Chris Shirek was still a teenager, and Wade Nygaard was the favorite to win even with Mark Dobmeier in the field. Either way it's good to see them come back. They absolutely FLY around this track. Just the sound they makes me get all tight in the pants. Also keep in mind, I've heard rumors of a certain famous sprint car driver making an appearance. And no, I don't mean Brad Pake. Although I think we should all start a campaign to get Pake back in a sprint car for just this race. Anyways, you don't want to miss out. I would guess that Sprint Cars will reach speeds of 130mph or more on the straights.

Also come check out the other 2 NLRA late model specials on 7/18 and 8/8. Plus the regular racing is fantastic too.

And a big thanks to everyone for the positive feedback from the previous blogs. I'll continue to plug away at them over the spring/summer/fall. The NCR banquet/ kick off event is April 13th and I'll probably have a write up on that.

2013 NCR predictions

It's time to find out who I think the top drivers in each class are gonna for the 2013 race season at Norman County Raceway. Keep in mind, this is just for fun. I'm gonna try my best to not be biased and to also not offend anyone. I'll break down my predictions by each class and/or category. Please feel to comment with your predictions as well.

WISSOTA Modifieds.
Points Champion: Travis Saurer. Travis won it last year and I don't see any reason why he can't do it again. But it will be close. No driver in the A-mods won more than 3 times this season. That's how good and tight this field is at NCR. I honestly believe that ANY driver could win ANY night in this class. But as far as points go its based on consistency, and we all know Travis Saurer is as consistent as Lindsey Lohan's criminal record.
Who to Watch Bryce Borgen, Alex Englestad, Cody Erickson. All these guys have been strong contenders before and they will be again. Bryce is cursed at NCR and hasn't won a race there in any class...EVER. That will end this year and I think early in the season he finds victory lane. Alex seemed to have an off year last year and that should turn around for him in 2013. I predict he gets 4 wins this year and is top 3 in points. Cody Erickson is a wild-man. If you know him personally you'll understand why. On the track he'll do what needs to be done to put the 1x in the front. He's been traveling all over this winter racing so he won't be rusty. Pending he passes tech inspection he should win a couple. (just kidding...but not really).

 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds
Points Champion: Rob VanMill. This was a tough prediction. It was either gonna be Rob or Tyler Hall, but Rob was a little more consistent. Those 2 had a lot of good battles last year along with Travis Saurer.
Who to Watch Everyone. This class constantly put on great racing throughout the entire field. It wouldn't surprise me to see B-mains most weeks as well. Tyler Hall will be fast again. Gannon Miller had a great sophomore season last year and will be a strong contender moving forward. It's been fun watching him get better and better every race. Spud Wagner showed some major improvements toward the end of last year and it wouldn't surprise me to see him in the top 5 on a regular basis. Also Tyler Peterson, Joel Larson, and Tony Englestad are sure bets to gets wins this year. And Travis Saurer...he's pretty good too.

WISSOTA MOD 4s
Points Champion: Derek Vesledal. He's young, he's fast, and he's from Fertile. I mean seriously that town breeds race car drivers and good looking women better than any town, other than maybe Harwood. But back to Derek...He's got a new car this year, new paint scheme, and probably a new haircut. Perks of dating a hairstylist I guess.
Who to Watch: Aaron Wetterlin, Bryce Bjerken, Rob "WinMill, Wetterlin had a great season last year as did Bjerken. We shouldn't see much change from last year. Maybe a few new faces this year, but the contenders should be similar. I haven't heard for sure if Rob VanMill is running the mod-4s this year or not. But if he does he's hard to beat. Hence the new nickname...Rob "WinMill"....you know like "windmill" .....get it?

Street Stocks
Points Champion: I have no idea.
Who to Watch: I didn't pick a points champion because it's unknown yet who the weekly competitors are gonna be, but I have a good idea who'll show up. Jim Geringer was the points champion at River Cities Speedway, and if he races weekly he'll be a top contender. Also James Tandeski should be strong, as he got the win at NCR last year for the one race they had there. Other notables include Doug VanMill, Scott Messner (any relation to Messner that used to race Super Stocks?).

Pure Stocks
Points Champion: Do you know Ken Crane? Just don't call him Kenneth...he doesn't like that. Ken's a fan favorite. And there is no driver more caring and devoted to his fans than Mr. Crane. I wish every driver was as noble and unselfish as this man. He's a great man, hell of a race car driver, and a superb interview. I'd really like to see him move up to a street stock though.
Who to Watch: This could be a make or break year for the Pure Stocks. With West Fargo shutting down, it could bring in a few more much needed cars. Jesse Skalicky is good, sometimes a little too good if you know what I mean. I'm sure he learned his lesson anyways. John Sandvig and Jeremy Pearson had good years last year.

Other random predictions
Mother Nature is a bitch I doubt we'll get an early start this year. And flooding might be an issue. We'll probably miss the first 2 weeks and a few more throughout the year due to rain.
Pack the Stands I think this will be an AWESOME year for crowd attendance. Last year was excellent and word has gotten out about the terrific racing on a nightly basis. Also the closing of RRVS doesn't hurt either.
Things get heated There's a lot of good A-mod drivers. A lot of them have tempers and take racing seriously. We saw it last year between Cody Skytland and Dustin Strand. Whether or not any drivers drop their fireproof gloves and duke it out is unknown, but I think we may see more of that again.

Feel free to call me an asshole and that I'm completely wrong, cuz I probably am. Also I'd like to hear your thoughts and predictions as well.

Changes coming to NCR

I feel like there's way too much damn snow on the ground to be getting everyone excited for the upcoming race season. But most drivers already have their cars tinned up and looking pretty so I guess it's time. As mentioned in my introductory post, I'll be writing a lot about Norman County Raceway. So I thought I'd talk about some of the upcoming changes to facility this year.

Scoreboard
This gets me excited. NCR is making it mandatory that all cars have transponders, something most tracks are going with now anyways. Transponders electronically do all the timing and scoring versus 3 people in the booth, who lets be honest, make mistakes. Because its all done electronically they can sync the timing up with a scoreboard that updates positions in real time. NEATO! When I talked to Jake Bitker (track owner) earlier this winter he said he was hoping to have it located either on the infield or on the back stretch. Either way with the scoreboard, plus the new lap counter installed last year, it should help modernize the facility. PLUS, if it's done the same way as River Cities Speedway, you should be able to download an app on your phone (for like $5) so that you can get the real timing on your droid or I-phone while watching the race.

Website
If you haven't been to the track website yet, I suggest you do as soon as you're done reading this post. Pardon my language, but HOLY BALLS is it an improvement over the old one. Not only does it no longer look like it was designed by a 6th grader, but the content is much better too. Along with the usual points, results, and schedule, you can now find driver profiles (which need to be filled out yet), photos, and even videos featuring stuff from YouTube of NCR. See for yourself at www.ncraceway.com

Street Stocks
We caught a glimpse of the Street Stocks last year, and I think most people were somewhat impressed. They're much more wide open and less predictable than the pure stocks. Don't get me wrong...the pure stocks can put on a hell of a show from time to time, but car #'s are low. NCR will still be running pure stocks and the trophy class, but not all 3 classes will run each week. Check the schedule for the dates the classes will run. NCR used to run street stocks when they first opened up. They move pretty good on the tracks wide, smooth surface. I would expect 2 heats every week.

Those are the main things. The 2013 schedule is looking sexier than a Louie Anderson in a wet suit. Ok, bad example. Very bad example. More on that to come in future posts.

Welcome to my racing blog!

Well I thought about this for a solid 6 minutes before I decided to go ahead with the publishing of my own blog. This blog will be used mostly for happenings in the racing world, specifically things that have to do with Norman County Raceway, as I'm there every week broadcasting their races on the radio. I will also use it to post interviews with drivers, post-race comments, opinions, and any other inside "dirt" that I happen to come across. The opinions are my own and do not reflect the radio station I work for.

There. All the boring stuff is out of the way. I'm excited to announce the return of "Racing on the Radio Review" Saturday mornings at 8:45am on 106.5 KRJB (krjbradio.com), Gold 101.5 KRJM (krjmradio.com) and our new sister station in Fosston, 96.7 KKCQ (kkcqradio.com). I'll have to double check, but I believe the first air date for this season is April 6th. I'm currently looking for interviews from drivers or people involved in the racing scene. Hit me up if you're interested.

Also if you haven't figured it out yet, we will once again be broadcasting the weekly racing live on Thursday nights from Norman County Raceway in Ada. Race broadcasts start at about 6:50pm with prerace coverage and can be heard on the airwaves of 106.5 KRJB and online at krjbradio.com. Along with the play-by-play of the race, we'll have driver interviews, post-race interviews from victory lane, and other misc. racing news. I also hope to bring back Mike Spieker again for the intermission report. And who knows, maybe Corey Litton will stumble his way from the beer garden and join me sometime. Which reminds me, my favorite part about broadcasting the races is my one free beer after the race. Mmmmmm.....beeeeeer.

Announcing....that I'm going to be doing some more announcing this year too. Most likely for the 6 pack 1000 enduro series and other random BAJA and possibly other Demo Derby stuff. I was asked to announce the Mudslingers ATV Mud Runs again as well, but it all depends on scheduling if I can or not. They're a lot of fun to announce and a great organization, but it takes alot to announce for 4 straight hours in the hot sun and then have to turn around and announce the BAJA race right afterwards.

That's all I got for now. Future blogs I will have my 2013 NCR predictions, changes coming to the track, and whatever I can preview for the upcoming racing season.
